2025 – The Center for Sustainable Infrastructure Development (CSID) at Faculty of Engineering Universitas Indonesia proudly announces that its Director, Prof. Ir. Mohammed Ali Berawi, M.Eng.Sc., Ph.D., has been awarded the prestigious Honorary Doctorate by Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University (SPbPU), Russia. The award recognizes Prof. Berawi’s significant contributions to international academic collaboration and research in the fields of sustainable infrastructure development, smart cities, civil engineering, and economic development.
Prof. Berawi expressed his appreciation for the recognition, noting that the award represents a meaningful acknowledgment of academic collaboration and shared commitment to advancing knowledge. He emphasized that international partnerships in education, research, and technology development play an essential role in addressing global challenges and accelerating sustainable development.
Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University is one of Russia’s oldest and most prestigious technical universities. Since 1984, SPbPU has awarded the Honorary Doctor title to more than 70 distinguished individuals worldwide. Based on the official letter issued on October 30, Prof. Berawi became the first academic from Indonesia to receive this honor from SPbPU.
The collaboration between the Faculty of Engineering Universitas Indonesia (FTUI) and SPbPU began in 2019 when Prof. Berawi was invited as a Keynote Speaker at the International Scientific Conference on Innovations in Digital Economy (SPBPU IDE 2019). During the conference, he presented insights on mega infrastructure project development, project feasibility improvement, and value creation processes through value engineering.
In the same year, Prof. Berawi was appointed as a Visiting Professor at the Graduate School of Industrial Economics at SPbPU. The partnership was further strengthened through a professor exchange agreement between FTUI and SPbPU. Under this collaboration, Prof. Berawi regularly delivers lectures on Value Added Engineering, while joint research initiatives have resulted in academic outputs including scientific books, special journal issues, and collaborative publications.
This international collaboration is also supported through high-quality academic publications, including the International Journal of Technology (IJTech)—a Q1-indexed journal published by the Faculty of Engineering Universitas Indonesia, where Prof. Berawi serves as Editor-in-Chief. Through these platforms, CSID continues to contribute to the advancement of knowledge and innovation in sustainable infrastructure development.
The Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Universitas Indonesia, Prof. Dr. Ir. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU, expressed pride in Prof. Berawi’s achievement, stating that the recognition reflects the global impact of FTUI’s academic contributions and serves as an inspiration for the academic community to continue strengthening international collaboration in science and technology.
Prof. Mohammed Ali Berawi is a Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at Universitas Indonesia. He earned his Master of Engineering Science from the University of Malaya in 2002 and completed his Ph.D. in Value Engineering at Oxford Brookes University, United Kingdom, in 2006. In 2022, he was formally inaugurated as a Professor at Universitas Indonesia.
Throughout his academic career, Prof. Berawi has received numerous national and international recognitions, including Best Young Researcher and Best Researcher at Universitas Indonesia, the Toray Science and Technology Award, recognition as one of Indonesia’s Top Scientists by Webometrics, inclusion among the Top 500 Indonesian Researchers by the Ministry of Research and Technology, and being listed among the World’s Top 2% Scientists by Stanford University.
Beyond academia, Prof. Berawi also contributes to national strategic initiatives. He currently serves as Deputy for Green and Digital Transformation at the Nusantara Capital Authority (IKN). Previously, he played a key role in Indonesia’s G20 Presidency in 2022 as Alternate Chair of Science 20 (S20). In addition, he leads international academic collaboration initiatives as Director of CSID Universitas Indonesia and Director of the ASEAN University Network – Sustainable City and Urban Development (AUN-SCUD).
Through these roles and partnerships, CSID continues to strengthen its position as a leading research center promoting sustainable infrastructure innovation and global academic collaboration. (SRU)
